Accredited training - screen

This level 3 course is the recommended training path for all screen describers.  It aims to teach and assess the skills required to describe film, television and other screen-based media, and to supply a basic knowledge of the context in which audio description operates.

The course caters for existing describers who want to expand their professional skills; for subtitlers, voice artists and allied professionals who plan to diversify into audio description; and for applicants who want to enter audio description by the screen rather than the theatre route.

It leads to the Certificate in Audio Description Skills (Screen) awarded by Certa, an awarding body recognised by qualification regulators throughout the UK.
The course is open to anyone over the age of 16 who has:

  • good editorial skills (ie. the ability to summarise information accurately and objectively)
  • good English writing skills
  • good IT skills, including a working knowledge of Word for Windows
  • and successfully completes a pre-course interview and/or audition tasks

The course is run over 5 x 7 hour days, spread over several weeks.  Assignments must be completed between teaching sessions.  Learners are provided with access to workstations with specialist software.

All assessment tasks must be completed to the required standard to achieve the certificate.

Fee for individuals:  in the region of £875 per learner (includes Certas learner’s registration charge of £25 per head).
